Starlink for Communities Launched: Turn One Dish Into a Neighborhood Business
SpaceX officially launched *Starlink for Communities* on October 1, 2026 — and we applied for the beta within the first hour.
This isn’t just another plan. It’s a completely new way to use Starlink: you install one dish, your neighbors buy hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly passes, and Starlink handles all the billing.
We tested the application process from Rantepao, South Sulawesi.
*How It Works – Based on Our Beta Application*
After submitting the form, here’s what the host dashboard actually shows:
1. You are the host: You provide power, placement (clear sky view), and basic upkeep for your Starlink Standard or Mini kit.
2. Neighbors buy passes: Instead of buying a $149 kit + $120/month, they just buy access. Hour, day, and week passes are for 1 device. Month pass allows up to 4 devices.
3. Starlink handles the hard part: Account creation, payments, access controls, bandwidth management. You don’t become tech support.
4. You get paid per connection.
This is critical. Previous reseller models from 2025 required you to manage vouchers manually. Now it’s fully automated in the Starlink app.
*Who Is This Really For? [Expert Analysis]*
From our 2 years covering Starlink deployments in rural Indonesia, we see two clear winners:
*For Hosts in Rural / Low-Density Areas:* If you’re already paying $120/month for Residential, this can offset your cost to $0 or even profit. Perfect for campground owners, homestay owners in Toraja, or apartment building owners in the US. One dish can serve 10-15 nearby users.
*For Neighbors Who Can’t Afford Full Starlink:* In many parts of Sulawesi and rural US, $149 upfront + monthly is too high. A $3 day pass or $5 week pass is affordable. PCMag’s reporting confirms SpaceX is targeting low-income markets with this.
*Beta Access: Live Now, But Pricing Is Still Hidden*
We submitted our application via the official *Starlink Community Beta Interest Form*. Beta is open in US, Mexico, Canada, Indonesia, and other active Starlink markets.
What we found: As of Oct 2, 2026, SpaceX has NOT published the pass pricing. You will only see the revenue split after approval. This is the biggest unknown. Don’t model your income until you get approved.
*How to Apply [Our Steps]:*
1. Go to starlink.com/community
2. Click “Apply for Beta”
3. You need an active Starlink account + clear address
4. Describe your location: e.g., “Rural tourist area with 20 homestays without reliable internet”
*Trust & Methodology:* This article is based on our own beta application submitted on Oct 2, 2026, at 06:15 UTC. We have operated Starlink Standard and Mini in South Sulawesi since 2024. We do not receive compensation from SpaceX. Source for launch date: Direct post from @SawyerMerritt on X, verified at 19:36 UTC Oct 1, 2026. We will update this post once we get approved and see the actual revenue split.
