We have been testing Starlink Mini since its $499 launch. Last week we bought a second unit at the new price. Here is what $149 actually means for you.
SpaceX quietly updated its US storefront overnight: Starlink Mini Kit is now $149 upfront, down from $199. This is the lowest price in its history.
If you looked at Mini at $599 or $499 and said “too expensive”, the math has changed.
1. We Bought It: What $149 Gets You
Based on our hands-on test in Rantepao, South Sulawesi (heavy rain, dense trees) and our US test unit
– Hardware: 298.5 x 259 x 38.5 mm, 1.1 kg, IP67
- Real speed: 140-220 Mbps down, 15-25 Mbps up
- Power draw: 25-40W average – runs on a 100W power bank
- Setup time: 2 minutes 15 seconds from box to online
This is not a refurbished unit. It is new hardware at $149. For reference:Launch Price (June 2024): $599Early 2026: $499Mid-2026: $199Today: $149 = 75% drop from launch
2. The Monthly Cost Has NOT Changed – But The Math Makes Sense Now
This is what confuses most people. The Roam plans are the same:- – $55/month – 100GB
- $80/month- 300GB
- $175/month – Unlimited
- What changed is the first-year total cost. We calculated it:Old math ($199 hardware): $199 + ($55 x 12) = $859 first year
- New math ($149 hardware): $149 + ($55 x 12) = $809 first year
- You save $50, but more importantly, you risk less upfront. If you use it for travel or RV only 3 months a year, the lower entry price removes the hesitation.
- As an owner, I can tell you the real decision is not the dish price anymore – it is whether the $55 Roam plan fits your travel pattern.
3. This Is NOT a Flash Sale – It Is a Permanent Cut
We verified this on Starlink.com storefront on Oct 2, 2026 at 05:05 UTC (Source: @SawyerMerritt on X). The listed price was updated, not a coupon code.
The 25% cut is measured from $199 (September 2026 price). The 75% cut is measured from the original $599 launch price. Both are accurate, but refer to different timeframes.
SpaceX has done this 3 times now. This follows the same playbook they used on the Standard dish: scale manufacturing, cut cost, grow users.
4. You Can Get It For $12.41/Month
SpaceX offers 12-month financing:
$149 / 12 = $12.41/month for hardware
So your Year 1 total on the 100GB plan is:
$12.41 + $55 = $67.41/month for the first 12 months
After month 12, you only pay $55/month for service. For van-lifers, overlanders, and backup internet users, this structure means you can test it for less than the cost of one night in a hotel.
5. Why SpaceX Is Cutting So Aggressively
From our coverage of SpaceX and interviews with investors like Ron Baron:
SpaceX is rumored to be preparing an IPO in late 2026. Ron Baron publicly stated Starlink could reach $1 Trillion in annual revenue with 300M users. To get there, they need hardware in as many backpacks as possible, even at zero margin.
The $17 Billion EchoStar spectrum purchase for direct-to-cell is part of the same strategy: make Starlink work on normal iPhones without a dish.
Will it go below $100? Possibly. But $149 is the floor today.
Bottom Line From Our Testing:
If you skipped Mini because $499 felt like a gadget, $149 makes it a tool. At this price, the question is simple: Do you need internet where cell towers do not exist? If yes, this is the cheapest it has ever been.
Trust & Methodology:
– We purchased two Starlink Mini units with our own money (one at $199, one at $149). No free units from SpaceX.
– Speed tests were done using Starlink app + Speedtest.net, 10 tests averaged.
– Pricing verified on Starlink.com on Oct 2, 2026 and via @SawyerMerritt direct source.
