Wolf Moon: How to See the January 2023 Full Moon

Written by Reananda Hidayat Permono Completed Master of Science - MS, Petroleum Geology from Curtin University, Perth, Australia.

The first full Moon in 2023 occurs this week; get your telescope ready to observe some craters around the rim, which are usually hidden in shadow.

The Orion Nebula and the brightest star in the sky, Sirius, are visible to the naked eye under clear conditions.

This year’s Wolf Moon, a cool name for the January full Moon, will be visible on Friday, 6 January 2023.

The Moon will appear in the northeast at 3:11 pm and will set at 9:03 am the next morning, on 7 November 2023.

If the weather spoils the big day, it will also appear full the night after and the night before. After all, the Wolf moon is not the only sky attraction on 6 January 2023.

Jupiter will be visible in the southern sky, and Mars will still be very bright in the eastern part. Hence, by around 7 pm, the full Moon will be lining up with Mars, Uranus, and Jupiter.

Regarding the Zodiac constellation, the Wolf Moon will be in the Gemini constellation, flanked on either side by Auriga the Charioteer and Cancer the Crab.

You can see a few Moon craters with the naked eye during the full Moon. There is a bright crater named Copernicus, slightly to the left of the Moon’s center.
