Elon Musk’s Twitter started suspending links to its competitor Mastodon on Thursday afternoon, which flags them as “potentially harmful.”
Interestingly, it happened one day after Twitter suspended the @ElonJet account that tracks Musk’s private jet.
According to archives, Mastodon (@joinmastodon) shared a link to the jet tracking account.
Banned domains also include mstdn.social and Mastodon.Social links to other servers without Mastodon’s name, like journa.host, still work.
Previously, many Twitter users put a Mastodon profile link into their profile header as an alternative social media account.
But any links to the stream are disabled and complemented by the text “Warning: this link may be unsafe”.
At 8 PM PT, Elon Musk’s Twitter blocked links to more servers that don’t reference ‘Mastodon’ in the domain name, like SciComm.xyz and journa.host.
The banned Twitter account @ElonJet belongs to Jack Sweeney, a Florida student who operates many flight-tracking bots that summarize flight information from public data.
Besides, Sweeney’s personal Twitter account was suspended, along with many of his bots.
Elon Musk’s personal and political references seemed to affect several Twitter policy decisions.
He expressed his commitment to support free speech but has disallowed some accounts for personal reasons.
Therefore, many users have shared alternative streams for expressing their opinions, including Mastodon.
